United Message from the Church Community

We believe that we must be loving and compassionate of all persons despite their lifestyle. At the same time we fully embrace the fact that love and compassion does not equal approval or agreement. Some in our culture has accepted two significant lies. The first is that if you disagree with someone’s lifestyle, you must fear or hate the individual. The second is that to love someone means that you must agree with everything he or she believes or does. Both are untrue. You don’t have to compromise convictions to be compassionate. Hence, we ask that all tolerate our position on the topic of gay marriage.

The faith community certainly is not perfect. For this reason we all need God’s love and grace. This love is available to those inside and outside of the church. We have all sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. He knew this, and this is why He sent His son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins: the things we say, think or do that is not pleasing to God. As a loving Creator we believe that He made us male and female and despite our preferences or how we define ourselves, He has defined same-gender sexual relations as unnatural in Romans 1:18-32 and many other places in the New Testament. However, we believe that this should not be highlighted above other sins: there is adultery, greed, lies, etc. that cause us to be serrated from God. For this reason God extends His love to us by giving us the opportunity to experience His forgiveness in a loving relationship with Him (John 3:16). Yes, He accepts us just as we are, but loves us to much to leave us how He found us. He is committed to transforming us one step at a time. If you want to experience this relationship why not pray this: “God I know I have sinned against you and I believe Jesus died and rose again for me. Jesus come into my life and save me. I put by trust in you. Amen”.

In fact did you know that the church is made up of broken, imperfect people. We are made up of previous drug addicts, alcoholics, thieves, sexual offenders, etc. And the truth be told, some of us are still struggling to break free from our past habits, history and hang-ups but there is power to be set free. The following passage from the Bible demonstrates who the church is made up of:

“Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 NLT (underscoring added for emphasis).

Going forward we want to do a better job of being relevant and loving all people. Just because we are against same-sex marriage does not mean we hate anyone, nor that we are insensitive to the desires of others. We just feel that there is a greater desire to follow and that is God’s desire for mankind. As the Creator of marriage and family, we believe He has the authority to say how it works best. The reason why we are against same-sex civil unions is by default, because it has been clearly documented that every country that has redefined marriage started with a same-sex civil union. Yet, going forward we want to do serve the people of Bermuda more than we have in the past, hence, we are discussing ways that we can do more to reach more people with God’s love and to help our community long after this debate is over.

We want to provide a safe-place for anyone who wants to talk about God or faith as it pertains to their lives. We are here to talk. Please call Pastor Troy Hassell at 234-3250, Director of Outreach, should you desire to talk or meet with any of the pastors represented below. We care for Bermuda, it’s people and the future generation.
